The American "grid" is a device conceived by Thomas Jefferson in the second half of the eighteenth century in order to face a vast campaign of surveys in the new continent. It attempts a fair subdivision of lands among landowners. The essay shows how this undertaking is faced with the most advanced scientific knowledge at the time of Jefferson and as a point of convergence between disciplines of architecture, survey and rural planning.
